EMLD members take part in Operation Black Vote (OBV) Black History Month celebrations at the Friends Meeting House on 29th October,9.00.00pm GMT Fri 30th Oct 2009
The host for the evening was Lee Jasper and inter mixed with live performances from Kadija Kamara, Ronke who are up and coming UK singers, Faith Jegede an inspirational poet and International comedienne Gina Yashere. groups also took place at the start of the evening. There were speeches from Higher Education Minister Rt. Hon David Lammy MP, founder of OBV Simon Woolley as well as EMLD Chair Cllr Meral Ece OBE, broadcaster, Floella Bejamin OBE, and broadcast journalist, and Liberal Democrat PPC for Bethnal Green and Bow, Ajmal Masroor and Liberal Democrat PPC for Hammersmith, Merlene Emerson. Cllr Meral Ece said: 'Operation Black Vote have laid on hugely inspirational and fantastic event which brought together a large number of BME people in London to celerate and commemorate inspirational Black figures in history' Merlene Emerson added: I was hugely privileged to have the opportunity to commemorate my own personal hero - Mahatma Gandhi who has also inspired great leaders including Martin Luther King, Aung Sung Su Kyi and President Obama. OBV have done it again - we all had a rollicking good time!'
